The murky and complex workings of stomachs, intestines, livers and gallbladders are not entirely fun to contemplate, let along devote your life to. So, although I was expecting a woman – the clinic name was a bit of a giveaway – I wasn’t expecting someone as bubbly as the beautiful Dr Andrea Rajnakova.

Choosing medicine was easy for her. “I never thought of anything else,” she admits. “I was always going to be a doctor. At four, I got my first doctor’s briefcase, and I never looked back.
“In high school, we had to fill in a form with our first, second and third choice of profession. The socialist regime in Slovakia was rather rigid at that time, and they refused to process my form unless I filled in the second and third options – so I wrote ‘Medicine’, ‘Medicine’, Medicine’, in each of the three rows. BurpGastroenterologist Dr Andrea Rajnakova from Mount Elizabeth Hospital sheds lights on what causes burping or the sour taste in your mouth which many of us experience occasionally.

Have you ever had the embarrassment of burping in the presence of others? Or, do you occasionally get a sour taste in your mouth or feel a burning sensation in your throat or chest?

According to Dr Andrea Rajnakova, these are some of the symptoms of reflux which happens when the acid in your stomach backs up into your throat and mouth. This constant backwash of acid can irritate the lining of your oesophagus, causing it to become inflamed. The oesophagus is the tube that connects your throat to your stomach. Bloating is the discomfort felt around the abdominal area. Abdominal bloating associated with distension is a common symptom in patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders. Bloating is reported by 6% to 31% of the general population.

Bloating may feel as a sharp pain or it may be associated with abdominal cramps. These pain and discomfort may occur anywhere in the abdomen and can change locations quickly. Occasionally it may be mistaken for heart pain when it develops in the chest as a consequence of reflux.
